We need to bring forward a debate about the merits of socialized health care…

  • Alan L. Maki

The Democrats have been playing around with the word "affordable" for a long time... here in Minnesota, a Democratic State Senator tried to pawn of a healthcare scheme through legislation, first as "single-payer universal healthcare," and when he couldn't get away with this, he started calling it "affordable universal health care."
Well, when I kept asking for a clear statement as to what he meant by "affordable," he said, "About $750.00 to $850.00 a month."
Most working people would have a very difficult time considering this "affordable."
Its time for the healthcare reform movements to convene a conference to discuss just what the requirements of the American people are when it comes to health care reform.
In my opinion, what we need is a national public health care system that is publicly funded, publicly administered with health services publicly delivered to the American people for free. If there are going to be any fees or taxes involved it should be like Social Security... payroll deduction with a large employer contribution. There would be no reason for such a tax to be higher than Social Security deductions.

  •

  • Inna Talantova In my opinion, Senators (US and State as well) should pay for their own health insurance. They are able to afford it.

  • Bowen Roberts ‎@alan--we need true universal ( single payer ) health care. your senator was scamming you on both counts. but you knew that. of course we'll have to pay for it. but no middle men, kind of like going right to the factory. available preventative care for everyone might even bring our (US) health profile back up to 1st world standards.

Medicare covers app. 15% of the oldest and sickest among us, including most end-of-life care (by far the most expensive). It is paid for primarily with a 2.9% payroll tax on wages, not income. Some people believe another 2.9% could cover ...our remaining youngest and healthiest 85%, but I think it would take a bit more (but no where near the 16-17% of GDP we spend now). The same year the head of Medicare & Medicaid earned app. $180,000 to manage the largest, sickest group we have, the CEO of United Health Group walked away from his job with $1.6 Billion in unexercised stock options, not including the hundreds of millions of $ he'd already cashed out, or the hundreds of millions of $ in addition that he was paid in salaries, or his retirement package. Go figure.

‎6% would be way too much for most working people. The Canadians do it for far less with payroll deductions and private delivery of health care services.
The problem is, private delivery of health care services in Canada is beginning to create a problem and now many Canadians are saying they need a socialized health care system in order to cut out the profiteers.
With a national public health care system that would cover everything from all the general health care needs from pre-natal to death and including eye and dental, a group of county and state health care administrators I have worked with over the years on health care reform, they tell us that with publicly financed, publicly administered and publicly delivered health care through a system of about 800 major health care centers supporting about 30,000 community based health care centers the cost would be about 1.2% payroll deduction for employees and 2% for employers. (This would NOT include initial start up costs but there are many ways to reduce the start up costs by using closed schools, doing what Manitobans had done, placing dental facilities in every elementary school which we could include children's complete healthcare in public schools vey cheaply--- Manitoba, a relatively poor Canadian province was able to place complete dental care facilities in every elementary school for practically peanuts and the Conservative Party came in and dismantled them all.)
By the way... Howard Pawley, who was the New Democratic Party Premier of Manitoba who led these reforms for dental care etc., is writing a book about his life and times heading up the Manitoba government... an organization like PNHP should consider bring Howard Pawley on a book signing/speaking tour... we could all learn a lot.
We would never consider turning our public schools over to the private-for-profit free marketers because we know this would result in massive illiteracy in this country so why would anyone continue to push for health care that leaves private delivery of health care intact.
I have traveled extensively throughout the Midwest talking to people about health care reform; what I have found when this real "public option," a national public health care system is explained people will support this over everything, including single-payer universal health care.
And, by the way, I am not anti single-payer; I wrote the best single-payer resolution that has passed anyplace in the United States which was approved by 72% of the delegates to the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party's State Convention... but, in recruiting over 600 delegates to this convention by speaking in meetings and around kitchen tables in every single Minnesota County (87); I pushed "single-payer universal health care as a step towards socialized health care."
It was including viewing single-payer as a "step" towards socialized health care that convinced people to become active, attend precinct caucus meetings, get themselves elected as delegates and vote for this resolution. I would note, without waging this "campaign" in the way we did, we never even would have passed our resolution... three previous attempts failed although we got over 50% of the convention votes each time... but passage of a resolution in Minnesota's DFL requires at least 60% approval.
I don't think the single-payer movement has thought most of this through very well because, and I mean no offense to anyone, but it has been doctors providing the strategy and ideology behind single-payer and to be very frank, I think they are looking out for their own livelihoods in all of this... doctors in this country simply do not want to become government employees like public school teachers; they know their incomes would be drastically reduced to just a decent living wage or salary... anyone can see that doctors employed by the Indian Health Service--- the closest thing we have to socialized health care in this country (well, in fact it is socialized health care in the full sense of the term) receive "only" about $100,000.00 a year. Most doctors in the private sector make considerably more and the American Medical Association has seen to it that we don't get "too many" doctors in this country which is one reason why we have rationed health care working the best for the well-heeled. Even with some of the best group insurance policies, many working people are being denied adequate health care by insurance companies refusing to pay for many things.
PNHP has done a good job raising awareness about single-payer but it is still stuck in the AMA mode of "private delivery." As the Canadian experience over many decades has demonstrated, Tommy Douglas and Dr. Norman Bethune were correct, that only a fully socialized health care system would finally solve the problem... and further, I would note, and emphasize, Tommy Douglas was not a single-payer supporter--- he and his CCF/NDP socialists agreed to single-payer as a "compromise" because at the time they didn't have the political strength to win socialized health care.
So, let us bring complete honesty to this dialog, discussion and debate by broaching the need for a national public health care system.
    Something to think about:
Here in Minnesota we couldn't even get a single-payer resolution through the State Convention of the DFL (Democratic Party) until we started talking socialized health care... now, consider this; had we been talking about socialized health care would Obama and the Democrats been able to pass the "Health Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industry Bailout and Profit Maximization Act of 2010?" In my opinion, we probably could have, and still can win single-payer but ONLY as a compromise once socialized health care is brought into this discussion on a national level.
I would also note that Frances Perkins advocated for socialized health care as part of the New Deal Reforms... the AMA killed it then and we must have the moral and political courage to stand up to these free-enterprising profiteers if we are going to achieve real health care reform.
I would also note that the right-wing intentionally labeled single-payer as socialized health care; it is time we teach the right-wing what socialized health care really is...chances are they will collapse in heart failure in an honest debate because the American people will insist on socialized health care just as they fought tooth and nail for Social Security, the best socialized system in the world... and what the right-wing really hates is that people will fight like hell to save Social Security.

    Obama's Foreign Affairs Magazine essay

This is the article written by Barrack Obama before the 2008 Election; why should anyone find it difficult to accept that Obama is working exclusively for Wall Street?

    Congratulations Mayor Coleman!

Now can we get to work on the promise Democrats made to save the St. Paul Ford Twin Cities Assembly Plant, the hydro dam and the 2,000 jobs. How about taking another look at public ownership of this plant and hydro dam that have been subsidized to the hilt by tax-payers--- including a brand new $30,000,000.00 training center and subsidized wages and even a tax-payer subsidized rail facility.

I notice you never stand in front of the St. Paul Ford Twin Cities Assembly Plant when you get your picture taken... any reason for that?

Good work you do. It is critical that we have Dems for this Nov. election - although I have plenty critic on issues.
Also - we have big challenges in Cali - I agree with you.

I am pleased on your responses - specially for unreal ones such as...Alan L. Maki!
Oh! boy, some are still in La! La! land of intelectualism!
    September 13

‎"La, la land of intellectualism"... cute; first time anyone ever called me an intellectual.

Run this through your head: I work with casino workers trying to organize in the Indian Gaming Industry who are forced to work in loud, noisy, smoke-filled casinos at poverty wages and without any rights under state or federal labor laws because the Democrats thought the campaign contributions they would receive from these mobsters were more important when writing the "Compacts" creating this Indian Gaming Industry where the rights of working people were intentionally omitted.

I hope you have as much compassion and empathy for the two-million casino workers in this country as you do for the Democrats and Barack Obama.

Now, you want to talk about what is "real" and "unreal?" I suggest you go talk to casino workers who are dropping dead from heart and lung problems and cancers working in these smoke-filled casinos so your beloved Democrats can reap tens of millions of dollars in campaign contributions from the mobsters who manage them and own the slot machines and table games getting rich off the poverty they are imposing on Native American Indian reservations.

Democrats; not Republicans, are responsible for these injustices.

    More thoughts on Labor Day

Submitted by Journal Staff on September 4, 2010 - 7:00am.

    To the editor,

Every September we take an opportunity to recognize working people and their contributions to our society. We recognize the people who built America’s great cities and the roads and rails that help us travel the country; we thank the people who teach our kids in school and take care of us in the hospitals; and we acknowledge the people who make the steel beams in our skyscrapers, the tires on our cars, and the paper in our textbooks and newspapers.

Working together through their Unions, working people also helped to shape our society. They won the weekend, the eight-hour day, public education, minimum wage, and important laws against discrimination in society and in the workplace. This weekend, United Steelworkers Local 159 wants to wish everyone a happy and safe Labor Day.

Here in our community, the Steelworkers are fighting to maintain stable family supporting jobs. Contract negotiations between the Steelworkers and Boise Inc. at paper mills across the country are ongoing. This round of bargaining, the stakes couldn’t be higher. We’re fighting to secure a pension plan that ensures a stable retirement so we won’t have to depend on our kids and grandkids to take care of us when we’re too old to work and we’re working to negotiate quality affordable health care for our families.

This Labor Day, as we recognize the workers who built this country, let’s also remember how important it is that we maintain good, secure, family-supporting jobs in our community.

Work hard… get out of poverty--- well, let’s talk about that

    Alan L. Maki

One time when I lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan Richard DeVoss, the big-shot Republican founder of AmWay called me and told me that he would help everyone get out of poverty if they purchased one of his kits to sell his AmWay products and if they were willing to work really hard they wouldn't be poor.

I asked Mr. DeVoss to provide me with the income tax returns of AmWay salespeople to prove his point--- next thing you know I heard this great big loud "clunk" on the other end of the line... unfortunately, most people who work at AmWay and sell his AmWay products are among the poorest of the poor.

I have also made some observations that people who work the hardest seem to make the least.

I worked for Lillian Vernon Corporation in Virginia Beach, Virginia for several years.

This is a huge sweatshop employing some 5,000 people. I was a Meistergram operator (a big computerized industrial sewing machine) making "top pay" in the place... if I worked 12 hour days six days a week I could afford to purchase groceries and usually manage to purchase gas to get to work between paychecks.

One day the plant manager came by telling everyone, "We are working a mandatory 7 days a week, ten hour days, for the next three weeks.

The elderly Black woman working behind me told him: "Why don't you people just bring back the chains." She had worked there for 13 years and was so poor she had to live with her children. The plant manager fired her on the spot for "insubordination."

The next day the plant manager came through and took away all of our stools to sit on... he said it was for "safety reasons." I asked him how the stools posed a safety hazard... he said he didn't want anyone to get tired and fall asleep and sew their fingers.

I have never seen people work so hard for so little. Once a year "Ms. Lilly" would tour her plant asking everyone how they liked their jobs... obviously no one asked her "When are you going to bring back the chains?"

I have always wondered how hard a person has to work to work themselves out of poverty.

If there was a correlation between people working hard and the amount of wealth a person attains in life I would think there would be 90-million millionaires and a couple-hundred thousand people--- maximum--- living in poverty.

Unite for peace to win jobs and end poverty

    Alan L. Maki

‎@Cathy... so far I haven't seen where there has been a focus on how Obama's wars kill jobs just like they kill people. To build a movement concerned with getting America back to work requires explaining all the reasons why the jobs are disappearing... I won't repeat what I have written elsewhere on this site... anyone interested can check out the discussion:

It makes no sense to me to rally behind supporting a President and a Party whose very policies are killing jobs.

Starbucks is now a "partner" in promoting this... Is it a goal to get everyone a job like people have at Starbucks?

Yesterday the big news was that there has been a sharp increase in poverty in this country... what is not being said is that most of the people living in poverty are EMPLOYED people with poverty wage jobs... like those people working at Starbucks--- people who get fired for trying to organize for real living wage jobs.

The Democrats, through clever "Compacts" created over two-million jobs for people in the Indian Gaming Industry at loud, noisy, smoke-filled casinos where poverty wages are enforced because none of these two-million workers have any rights under state or federal labor laws or the NLRA... and even the Employee Free Choice Act will not protect us.

Is the enforcement of affirmative action part of the "jobs" agenda... I don't see the enforcement of Executive Order #11246 mentioned anywhere in any of your materials.

People have been trying to get these questions and concerns answered for months with NO responses from anyone.

Now this march is apparently turning out to be a mobilization to "get out the vote for Obama and the Democrats" rather than a march to serve notice on Obama and the Democrats that we expect: jobs at real living wages created from funds obtained by ending these dirty wars and taxing the rich--- not merely ending the tax-cuts on the rich... there is going to have to be a very hefty tax increase on the rich to pay to put America back to work.

I am not bringing forward any kind of "side issues" to the jobs issue; these are issues very important to the jobs issue. It is these kinds of very issues involved in the jobs issue that make it possible for all these organizations to really unite.

My response to Tim Pawlenty’s attack on public education…

    Alan L. Maki

Tim, you have instituted "deforms" to our public school system here in Minnesota... I'll give you a Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, but never my vote if you run for president.

Public schools are NOT failing our children... politicians like ...you you don't support the concepts of free, universal public education sabotaging our public schools in order to then turn around and claim for political expediency that they are failing is the only problem.

There is no institution--- public or private that has been so successful in carrying out its mandate than our public schools... that our public schools have survived thirty years of your Republican attacks is nothing short of a miracle.

The wars you and Obama and most Democrats and Republicans support in Iraq and Afghanistan is killing our public schools just as they are killing jobs and people.

It will be great to have a new Governor, Mark Dayton, a true friend of public education be our next governor after these dark dreary years of putting up with you. I hope all you rich people pack up and leave Minnesota to escape all the taxes that are going to be imposed on the rich... we will be able to manage just fine.

The problem with the lawsuit filed against Obama’s health care legislation

    Alan L. Maki

The problem is, right-wingers are bringing this lawsuit and the real issues are never going to be properly heard by the court. I find it interesting that the United Steelworkers and the AFL-CIO can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars filing a brief against the Chinese for controlling their own currency in a way that benefits the Chinese people but these same unions haven't bothered to challenge Obama's "Health Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industry Bailout and Profit Maximization Act of 2010" which uses the "color of law" in a discriminatory way to coerce people into purchasing health insurance from private-for-profit corporations pretending this is no different from making people pay into Social Security, a wholly public, governmental institution.

In fact, Obama and the Democrats could have established the very same national public health care program that Franklin Roosevelt's Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins, advocated at the time and paid for it in the very same way as Social Security is paid for through employee/employer payroll deductions/contributions.
This right-wing challenge in the courts will never make these important points... why no challenge from the ACLU?

Don’t just fire Simpson; abolish the commission

    Alan L. Maki

Social Security and all of its associated programs should be expanded with benefits increased to provide people with real living incomes. Obama has created this dastardly and contemptible "Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform" for... the express and implicit purpose of attacking Social Security and all the excellent programs it includes. That he placed Alan Simpson, a Neanderthal, as one of the co-chairs demonstrates Obama's own contempt for the working class. Now, as an election eve ploy, Democrats and their loyal partners leading organized labor are calling for Simpson's removal when the call should be for the complete abolition of the commission. "Fiscal responsibility" requires the government financing more universal social programs like Social Security not putting Social Security on the chopping block. Every universal social program created creates new jobs. Social Security works; public education works... now is the time to build unity of liberals, progressives and the left to defend our existing programs such a coalition won while demanding of government public health care and public child care systems instead of continuing to finance these dirty wars.

Chinese currency manipulators; no concern of mine.

@Chris; I think we both read the same article but came away with different opinions of it.

To save some time, let me refer you to something I just recently posted about these very issues on UnionBook--- one of the leaders of the Communist Party USA took essentially the same position you are taking and this was my response:

    http://unionbook2.ning.com/profiles/blogs/on-the-importance-of-the

Now, as for issues concerning abuse and mistreatment of workers I am somewhat of an authority on this issue having worked with casino workers employed in the Indian Gaming Industry who are forced to work for poverty wages in loud, noisy, smoke-filled casinos without any rights under state or federal labor laws because Democrats created these "Compacts" intentionally depriving these workers of their most basic and fundamental rights, not only as workers, but as human beings.

Now, I requested from every single leader in the AFL-CIO, including Richard Trumka, who are so concerned about the rights of working people in China... to bring some pressure to bear to re-open these "Compacts" to include casino workers being protected and covered by the very same state and federal labor laws, including the NRLA as all other working people in this country.

Mind you; there are now over 350 of these casinos and related restaurants, motels, hotels, theme parks in the Indian Gaming Industry employing some two-million of your fellow American workers... please, spare me your concern for workers in China... they are not going to get any real help from you or the AFL-CIO if you can't even demonstrate a modicum of concern for your fellow workers employed under these most hideous, atrocious and Draconian conditions.

Plus, if you were really concerned about what the Chinese are doing--- rather than trying to dictate what they do with their currency in the currency markets--- a Wall Street dominated market place--- you and Richard Trumka and Leo Girard would be putting together a delegation to go to China to meet with its bankers about coming up with the funds to re-open some of these 3,700 closed mines, mills and factories as cooperative, joint ventures putting millions of our unemployed back to work.

Give me a break... Democrats are just as responsible as Republicans for this entire economic mess... and this is why the majority of your fellow workers don't even bother voting anymore.

Might I suggest, rather than pumping tens of millions of dollars into the campaign coffers of a bunch of Dumb Donkeys, what we need in this country is a labor-based peoples' party like the Canadian workers and labour movement have in their New Democratic Party.

At a bare minimum what we need is a bonafide labor caucus inside of the Democratic Party that isn't afraid to challenge Wall Street and its politicians they toss our way like this flim-flam man and con artist who is nothing but a sleazy and shrewd salesman for the insurance industry and the pharmaceutical companies who concocted this scam I call the "Health Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industry Bailout and Profit Maximization Act of 2010." As a sideline, Obama is a cheerleader for the merchants of death and destruction perpetrating these wars which are the real killers of our jobs just like they are killing people in Iraq and Afghanistan... and, in case you haven't noticed, it is working class folks doing the dying as Wall Street profits.

Cry me a river of complaints about the Chinese currency manipulators... I think I'll learn to play the violin.

ACLU spends $800,000.00 to staff an office with no results…

    Alan L. Maki

It isn't good enough to speculate on the roles people are playing... why not ask them publicly to explain their positions... the ACLU in Minnesota is nothing but a front organization for the Democratic Party and they have yet to do anything... of any benefit for people out of their office in Bemidji. According to their own newsletter the ACLU has spent $800,000.00 to staff and maintain their "Racial Justice Task Force" in Bemidji yet where are the results?

Silence on police harassment and police killing people.

Silence on peat mining in the Big Bog.

Silence when it comes to enforcing affirmative action in the planning, construction, staffing and maintenance of the Bemidji Regional Event Center as local, state and federal politicians thimb their noses at affirmative action.

    Silence on the Enbridge pipeline.

    Silence on the powerline.

Silence on the right of the Warriors for Justice to be on the ballot.

Silence on fishing, hunting and gathering rights.

    Silence on Treaty Rights.

Silence on the fact that the Democrats have entered into "Compacts" with corrupt tribal officials that now have over 40,000 Minnesotans, including over 8,000 Native Americans, working in smoke-filled casinos without ANY rights under state or federal labor laws at poverty wages while the absentee owners of the slot machines and table games walk away with all the profits which has resulted in worse poverty than existed before the Indian Gaming Industry came into existence.

Silence on discrimination in hiring by just about every single small and large business plus public institutions and governmental agencies in the Bemidji area.

$800,000.00 on an office and staff and not one single problem undertaken for solution and NO problems resolved.

Make no mistake; I did not err in the number of zeros I placed in this figure of $800,000.00.

It is eight-hundred thousand dollars... almost one-million dollars--- and for what?
To serve as a front for the Democratic Party and their campaign contributors from the peat mining industry, the power generating industry and that dirty, filthy corrupt Minnesota Indian Gaming Association that has spent tens of millions of dollars supporting these very politicians who are pushing through the power lines, the pipelines, the casinos paying poverty wages and treating people like dirt... Doesn't anyone find it just a little strange that every election cycle the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association spends millions of dollars and not one single Native American is sitting in the Minnesota State Legislature.

But, look who is the lobbyist for the power generating industry. Roger Moe who received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association... has anyone seen hide nor hair of John McCarthy, the head of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association who funnels all this money to these politicians from the casino profits just once stepping forward and insisting that the politicians he is bribing do the right thing by the people in opposing any of this from the peat mining to the pipelines to the power lines? How does it happen that these politicians like Roger Moe, Mary Olson, John Persell, Brita Sailer, Rod Skoe all come down on the wrong sides of these issues while taking the money from a casino industry called the "Indian Gaming Industry?"

And it is these same casino funds which are maintaining tribal councils which are just as corrupt as the Minnesota State Legislature... surprise, surprise... it is the same casino funds, that should be going into decent wages and to alleviate poverty, that continue to be pumped into maintaining an entire system of politically corrupt politicians beholden only to a bunch of mobsters and big-business interests... tribal councils and a state legislature--- the best money can buy.

Anyone want to guess where an outfit like the Minnesota American Civil Liberties Union comes up with $800,000.00 to fund an office in Bemidji with no accomplishments or results that it can document?

Where could $800,000.00 possibly come from?

And whose interests are best served by this outfit which leads people to believe they are doing something about very serious problems but in fact all they are doing is scheming and scamming in running interference for those out to deprive people of their rights and steal more of their wealth while giving them cancers and heart and lung problems?

From the Ed Schultz website: https://www.wegoted.com/events/detail.asp?eventID=37
ONE NATION shares the labor movement's policy agenda: An economy that works for all; good jobs, fair jobs, safe jobs, and more jobs; reforming Wall Street; rep...airing our immigration system; quality education for every child; and ensuring that everyone in America has the opportunity to contribute to and strengthen our country. Restoring workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively is at the heart of the policy agenda.

      • Alan L. Maki

The reason I ask this question is because I was told by one of the organizers of this march that peace is "part" of the agenda. However, my concern is that the only ones I have heard mention anything about peace are the peace activists.
I have yet to hear Richard Trumka or anyone representing the AFL-CIO in this march explain:
How these dirty wars make us poor.
        Answer the question:
How is Obama's and the Democrats' war economy working for working people?
Or state the very basic and fundamental fact that:
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are killing jobs as fast as they kill people.
There is a direct correlation between unemployment and militarism and war.
The fact is, when a Nation spends its resources on wars it is just about like tossing the wealth of the Nation out into the deepest depths of the ocean.
When we spend on war that is money that can't be spent creating a national public health care system and a national public child care system... two desperately needed universal social programs aimed at solving the problems of working people.
In fact, jobs are created by solving the problems of the working class, society and creating the things working people need to live decent lives.
If we stopped squandering the wealth of our country on militarism and these dirty wars for oil and regional domination while financing over 800 U.S. military bases on foreign soil protecting every two-bit, half-assed fascist bastard whose objective in life is providing Wall Street coupon clippers with cheap labor and natural resources and raw materials and manufactured products we could have free health care and child care for everyone in this country and these two programs alone would create over 15 million new, good, decent paying jobs.
It is nice that a full program is "in the works" and will be announce soon. But, I am wondering, based upon what I am reading and hearing if the leaders of the AFL-CIO or most of the other organizations involved in this aren't evading the links between joblessness and unemployment and militarism and war and solving the very real problems of the American people... all of which are linked together inseparably--- yet, where is this linkage?
I have been told the AFL-CIO "let peace organizations participate by marching and having table space." Is not the program and platform around which this march is being organized going to include linking employment to peace?
Am I not asking valid questions here?

      • Alan L. Maki

‎@Debbie; I just finished reading the link you provided... not one word about these wars or peace.
Also, I have noted two other things missing:
The need to enforce affirmative action and the need to "tax the rich."

Quite frankly, I don't think it is good enough to say: "Stay tuned; the program and platform will be coming out."
This program and platform should be open for discussion, dialog and debate before it is finalized.
I have been asking for months how people can participate in this; no responses from anyone.
If we are marching for jobs and justice, it makes no sense to me not to demand an end to these wars... unless someone can explain how any Nation can create jobs while spending not just millions, but billions and trillions of dollars on wars and militarism.
Should we be telling the Democrats we are going to be turning out to vote for them while they are killing our jobs while killing other people with our tax dollars?
I think I speak for quite a few people in saying we should be sending Barack Obama and the Democrats a much different message that goes something like this:
        No peace; no votes.
No real health care reform; no votes.
No national public childcare centers; no votes.
        No jobs; no votes.
It is reasonable to think that Obama and the Democrats can end these wars (and ending these wars does not include occupying the countries) and announce a program to get America back to work by solving the problems of our people--- by Election Day... November 2... they pushed through all this other crap for the benefit of Wall Street much quicker.
I think the fact that some, maybe most I don't know, of the organizations sponsoring this march are doing so as an effort to get out the vote for Democrats, most of whom don't deserve or votes on Election Day because they haven't done anything to earn our votes since they have been a majority in the House and Senate with a Democratic president.
I hope others will voice their comments and concerns here.
But please; I don't want to hear from anyone that I am against the Democrats or the Democratic Party... I have worked in the Democratic Party in three states where I have lived over the last 40 years and I am working very hard to elect Mark Dayton the next Democratic Governor of Minnesota who is campaigning on the theme: Tax the rich. Dayton also understands the "guns or butter" argument better than most.
Mark Dayton should be invited, if he hasn't already been, to address this march and rally so the people of our Nation get a chance to see and hear what a true liberal with some progressive viewpoints who isn't afraid to bring forward a left agenda really sounds like--- you know, what we thought we were getting with Barack Obama but we didn't.
Maybe I am wrong in the way I am looking at all of this; I am willing to listen.

An organization whose leaders claim to be concerned about young workers…

    • Alan L. Maki

Interesting... Did John Bachtell inform your workshop that more young workers have been employed, are employed and will be employed in the Indian Gaming Industry than any other industry besides the fast food industry?

    • These young workers, like all casino workers, are employed in loud, noisy, smoke-filled casinos at poverty wages without any rights under state or federal labor laws because Democrats, including Barack Obama, continue to approve the "Compacts" they created in alliance with a bunch of mobsters who own the slot machines and table games and in return for imposing these most Draconian conditions on workers, including so many young workers--- especially young women of child-bearing age and nursing mothers who suffer ill health the most from working in these smoke-filled casinos--- just because the Democrats have found this sleazy little "arrangement" to be beneficial to their campaign coffers... in fact, Barack Obama was financed to the hilt by the like of the Fertitta family and their equally sleazy friends... these are the "managers" of the casinos in the Indian Gaming Industry.

    • I think it is pathetic that the YCL and the CPUSA would support Barack Obama knowing about his connivance and scheming in the Indian Gaming Industry which is providing a first job for many young people whose lives are being ruined for the rest of their life.

    • Maybe the YCL and CPUSA leaders should check out the impact of second-hand smoke and consult with the heart and lung foundation and the American Cancer Society along with the Indian Health Service whose head administrator compares these smoke-filled workplaces as the modern day equivalent of small pox-laden blankets.

    •
Over one-million young workers are presently employed in the Indian Gaming Industry... millions of these young workers (over the last 25 years) now suffering terrible debilitating diseases because the Democrats, including Obama, gave them this death sentence.

  • A comment to Richard Trumka relating to China…

    • Alan L. Maki

What's we these constant attacks on China by you and the other leaders of the AFL-CIO... China isn't taking the jobs of any U.S. workers. You should be pushing Obama and the Democrats for policies aimed at keeping jobs right here in this country. Any corporation seeking cheap labor in China or anyplace else in the world should face swift and severe penalties... the penalty should be a seizure of any assets and mines, mills and factories they leave idle. Bring them back into operation under public ownership creating what we need right here in this country. This country is falling apart left and right... there is plenty of work to do for the next one-hundred years just creating the kinds of social programs we need like national public health care and national child care... I have yet to hear of the Chinese government issuing any kind of edicts preventing us from creating jobs through solving the problems and needs of our own people. I did see the president you support pushing down our throats the "Health Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industry Bailout and Profit Maximization Act of 2010" when what we need to do instead is establish a vast network of public health care centers and child care centers instead of ringing the globe with over 800 U.S. military bases on foreign soil protecting every half-assed, two-bit fascist dictatorship where workers have no rights and work for peanuts put in place by Wall Street and all paid for compliments of the U.S. tax-payer among whom are a bunch of filthy rich bastards who evade paying their fair share in taxes.
You should focus on how Obama is screwing us right now and insist he do what is right before the election than the rest will take care of itself and we won't have to worry about what Boehner and his Tea Baggers smothering democracy are going to do.
Now that Wall Street has hi-jacked the Chinese economy what the hell do you expect Chinese workers to do? Do you really expect China to sit by and not try to win the game that Wall Street bankers have been playing for years as they have manipulated currency?

  • An answer as to why there is no basis for this nonsense being pushed about right-left “cooperation”…

    Alan L. Maki

Please note: The real reason why this “unity” theme is being pushed is because Wall Street is deathly afraid of the resurrection of the historical and powerful coalition of liberals, progressives and leftists capable of winning real change. This is the bottom line.
‎@Jeremy; I appreciate your perspective but my response was not so much in response to what you have articulated here which was very clear... I intentionally chose not to respond to this portion at the time because I was expecting you to answer the question I raised first.

However, since you are looking for a response to this part of your comment now, I will oblige (hoping you will also address my original comment and question).
I do not believe there is anything upon to which such "unity" around issues and solutions to problems is possible because liberals, progressives and the left (while there are disagreements of one kind or another [perhaps I am understating the differences]) have a pretty much mutual agenda that no conservatives would agree to... an example: health care reform... I know of no liberals, progressives or leftists who believe the private sector, the health insurance industry or the profit gouging pharmaceutical industry industry should remain in private, corporate hands... every liberal, progressive and leftist that I know believes that single-payer universal health care with public financing, public administration and private delivery (there are disagreements here on private delivery since many of us--- liberals, progressives and leftists support public delivery of health care services, too... or at least a vastly expanded public health care sector with public delivery).

Now, come on Jeremy, there is no way you are going to support such reforms... you believe in "free market" "private enterprise" solutions... please correct me if I am wrong.

This is but one of dozens of examples I could provide... chances are, you don't believe in minimum wage legislation while all liberals, progressives and leftists that I know are for the minimum wage becoming a real living wage (and I have my ideas on how to accomplish this and I am sure among liberals, progressives and leftists there are divergent views on how to accomplish this--- but, we all support minimum wage legislation being used to enforce living wages).

    Need I continue?

There is a basis for liberal/progressive/left unity in action through the forging of a massive coalition around a "progressive agenda" (after all, progressive refers to the point at which liberals and leftists agree to act around attaining common aims even if philosophically we aren't always in agreement).

Now, where would you say your views fit in here? And, I mean no offense to you personally; nor do I mean to exclude you on anything you might want to work with such a coalition on... but, what is it that you see liberals, progressives and the left working together with conservatives on? Do you have an issue/s in mind?

The left/right division in politics is a very clear reality... in fact, in his recent Cleveland speech, most liberals (and progressives and leftists) who had been supporting Obama who have read and studied this speech and his Milwaukee speech a couple days before... are now concluding that Obama has everything in common with conservatives except for the twisting and perverting of his use of the English language to try to conceal his very conservative and rightist agenda with liberal, progressive and even left rhetoric.

We will now be seeing a completely different kind of political development taking place as more and more liberals, progressives and those on the left call upon Obama to step aside in order to prevent even more losses to Republicans than what will be taking place come November 2.

Come on; get real, Jeremy... can you name (and forget party labels here because there are many Republicans of an Abe Lincoln bent who cannot stomach Boehner), but, name one single liberal, progressive or leftists who would join you in welcoming Boehner into his new position?

Fist things come first and the first order of business for liberals, progressives and the left is now how do we get these conservative Democrats (including Obama) off our backs. Obviously, the Congress is now going to be controlled by conservatives--- but, since when hasn't it been? Even when FDR was president we had a majority conservative House and Senate but, we also had the most powerful liberal/progressive/left coalition pushing a progressive agenda down their throats rather than these politicians forcing their Wall Street agenda on the people.

It is important who gets elected to public office and their views; but, even more important is that this massive liberal/progressive/left coalition be forged around a progressive agenda and that again, like in the 1930's and with the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War movements... this mighty and powerful progressive coalition gets restored to look after the needs of working people and the racially oppressed victims of racism. Only massive government intervention with the government becoming the employer of CHOICE is going to get America back to work and force an end to these dirty wars so these resources being wasted on these wars--- instead of becoming "tax-cuts" like you want--- are turned into financing universal social programs like public health care and public childcare wit a program of "tax the rich" being used to make up the funding the cuts in militarism and war do not completely satisfy.

By now, Jeremy, you must be re-thinking your position that there is any possibility of the "unity" which you speak of but without any specifics.

And, like I say, this is nothing personal against you; you have obviously arrived in your thinking from your place in life where you see tax cuts and an end to government with its fingers into everything as a problem.

You know, Jeremy... I think I speak for the vast majority of working people here in this country and around the world in saying, "we don't give a damn about how much the government taxes us provided we have what we need to live good, decent, healthy lives with adequate jobs, housing, schools, healthcare, good mass transit systems, clean water to drink and some time and space for a little recreation." I don't know of one single working person who wouldn't be happy to have the government take their entire paycheck in taxes provided the taxes are going to provide people with decent lives... and furthermore, we couldn't care less how big government gets--- whatever it takes to get the job done.

Unless you have had a complete change of ideology in the past few minutes; I doubt you can really find much to agree with on with liberals, progressives and the left--- so, why bother?

Let me just add... the real reason we are being bombarded with this idea at this time that there is something that conservatives and liberals, progressives and the left can work together on if we can just set aside the divisive labels and focus on the issues is because Wall Street is deathly afraid that the historic coalition of liberals, progressives and the left is about to be resurrected and Obama is going to find himself out on hiss butt with someone like a true progressive like George McGovern coming into the mix of things--- a replay of sorts of 1972... only this time we (liberals, progressives and leftists) are going to WIN! The handwriting is on the wall, so-to-speak.

My Sunday morning sermon: The extremely wealthy stay in the background as they financing and fueling campaigns of hate in the name of religion…

    Alan L. Maki

It always amazes me how much hate takes place in the name of religions all claiming to have a moral compass for humankind... one reason why I am adherent of modern scientific materialism.

Personally, I would rather see public day care centers, public schools and public health care centers going up instead of churches, synagogues or mosques... all of which we have plenty of in this country and most of these buildings just set idle most of the time except when people are being taught to be intolerant of one another or when the ministers, rabbis and imams aren't giving their blessings to go out and kill one another.

But, with this said; we all know there wouldn't have been a peep from anyone if a church or synagogue was being built, don't we? And the result has been a very typical good old American despicable display of plain old racist bigotry towards Muslims that is now tearing away at our social fabric feeding the two-bit half-assed fascists in the Tea-bagger movement financed by the Koch family that is riddled with John Birchers and KKK'ers who have been looking for a way to spread their message of hate.

The only good thing about any of this is that most Americans are very good people who would never indulge in crimes of hate, and in response to this bigotry there always arises a movement to combat these campaigns of hate... just as movements for peace arise to oppose unjust imperialist wars for occupation and movements arise in opposition to poverty.

Unfortunately, since these movements in opposition to racism always come from the grassroots working class people, it sometimes takes a little longer to get organized and going because of lack of funds while these movements based upon hate are always funded by the extremely wealthy... maybe since these wealthy people have so much money to spare to finance racist bigotry and hate we should just consider relieving them of a substantial portion of their wealth by taxing the hell out of the rich to pay for things like public healthcare and public childcare and public education.

An example of a good Letter to the Editor recently published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on September 7, 2010:

    WAR IN IRAQ
Page not turned enough by President Obama

"Time to turn the page in Iraq," says President Obama.

Combat troops are withdrawn. However, there are still 56,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. These noncombat troops will wear uniforms and presumably will carry weapons.

As of July, there were 110,000 contractors paid by the United States, and the State Department plans to double the number of "private security forces." Not a big enough corner turned, by my observation.

Alan L. Maki There is heated debate taking place on FaceBook about Barack Obama and the Democrats: Are they friends or foes of the working class? What do you think? I have posed some questions for discussion on UnionBook... you might want to check them out:

Barack Obama; friend or foe of the working class? - UnionBook

    unionbook2.ning.com

There is a great deal of confusion swirling around Barack Obama in the working class movements here in the United States and around the world. It becomes vitally important for working people to know and understand which class Barack Obama serves. We have seen some of this controversy right here ...

    Wednesday, September 8, 2010

I just love it when Democratic Party hacks announce on FaceBook they have a “zero tolerance” policy on their pages for “criticism of the Dems until after the Election” as Lizzie has done in removing my posts… consider this: there is always the next election so criticism is never in order.

    Alan L. Maki

‎@Lizzie; No one is talking about "perfection." We are talking about getting "something" in return for our votes. This is not being "spoiled." Democrats have no right to expect the votes of working people without delivering something in ret...urn... we have seen "bi-partisan compromise" but no compromise when it comes to the standard of living of working people from Obama and his Administration... how do women feel about the failure of the Obama Administration to enforce affirmative action as billions of their tax-dollars go to the coffers of Wall Street profiteers under the guise of "stimulus funding?"

How far do we take your analogy: " I guess women are USED to dealing with imperfect situations and making the best of them."

If we take this analogy to its logical conclusion you should come meet some of the women I work with who come to work each day with new lumps, cuts and bruises because they follow this "logic."

Getting beat up by your friends and partners and then turning around and voting for them under the guise that "this is an imperfect situation" makes no sense at all to me.

Even if you are correct, and I don't think you are, that this is the time to go all out to vote for the Dems this would not preclude discussing building a progressive third party alternative... it is possible for people to walk and talk and chew gum at the same time.

I have put in a lot of hours of my life working for Democratic candidates, and I continue to do so when they are the least little bit progressive as in the case of the Minnesota Democratic Party's candidate for governor, Mark Dayton who has brought forward a campaign advocating "tax the rich" and has voiced support for teachers and public employees along with his public promise to enforce affirmative action. Is Dayton perfect? No; but at least he provides things of substance making him worthy of receiving the votes of working people. I expect no less from Barack Obama and any other Democrat in return for my vote.

Do some people not understand Barack Obama is right-wing?

    Alan L. Maki

Rossana; the problem is, for working people the glass is neither half-full nor half-empty... for working people there is nothing in the glass... it is simply empty.
Why shouldn't I be as quick to criticize Obama as you are quick to support him and the Democrats? Movements cannot be built around supporting candidates like Obama. Movements are built around issues advancing solutions to the problems working people are experiencing.

I would note that I stated the video was very good... it was the captions which were dishonestly placed on the video which I was taking issue with.

Obama is part of the right-wing that you refer to... how could anyone supporting Wall Street's agenda be anything except for right-wing?

As I am sure you will admit, Obama is not a liberal, he is not a progressive and he is definitely not left-wing even though he had one of the best left-wing advisors growing up in Frank Marshall Davis from whom he learned all the correct rhetoric to try to conceal the reactionary agenda he is bringing forward. Barack Obama is a reactionary trying to conceal Wall Street's reactionary agenda in liberal and left-wing rhetoric--- very clever, indeed; he may not be as "bad" as Sara Palin; but, he is definitely attacking, not helping, the working class.

"Movement building" has become very difficult given the confusion surrounding Obama with many liberals, progressive and even those on the left being hoodwinked--- and often badgered--- into supporting Obama.

I would sincerely encourage you to reassess Barack Obama and what he is doing from a working class perspective.

I assume my dissatisfaction with "the system" is the same as your dissatisfaction with this rotten capitalist system which thrives on corruption and racism.
Don't you find it noteworthy that Obama and his Administration has become the very first Administration to refuse to enforce affirmative action on all of these stimulus funded projects since Lyndon Johnson signed Executive Order #11246 into law? Talk about being right-wing, Obama is a right-winger's dream come true.
Anyone who knows me understands that I would be the first one calling for support for Obama if I thought for a minute that what he was doing was to advance peace and raise the living standards of working people. I am not against the Democratic Party in any way except when what they do is wrong... in fact, I have been among the most vigorous and outspoken supporters of Mark Dayton, the Democratic candidate for governor here in Minnesota who has come out advocating a program of "tax the rich," and for the strict enforcement of affirmative action. In fact, Mark Dayton publicly sought my support in his campaign to become Minnesota's next governor. I sincerely doubt if I was as pessimistic as what you would lead people to believe that the Democratic candidate for governor would have so enthusiastically sought my support and help... of course, most of Obama's top supporters, the well-heeled, in the Democratic Party here in Minnesota are calling Mark Dayton, "crazy."

I might suggest that if it is difficult for you to make the distinction between a liberal with some progressive ideas backing the left-wing agenda of "tax the rich" you check out this YouTube video of Mark Dayton speaking to the Minnesota DFL State Central Committee meeting and compare Dayton's approach to problems with Obama's:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlipIaVskPc

I did not attack you personally; I criticized the video for very specific reasons and instead of responding to my criticisms you come out defending Obama and attacking me... why, I don't know... perhaps after you view this YouTube video we can have a more amicable conversation about what is liberal, progressive, left-wing and right-wing and what kind of policies and programs Obama should advance before he is worthy of working class support... also, note the huge difference between the way Dayton views public employees like teachers with what Obama has done.

I would also encourage you to consider Obama's intent to use this Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to attack Social Security and our public institutions which are, when all is said and done, an attack on social programs... was not Obama's attack on the Food Stamp Program a thoroughly right-wing, reactionary attack aimed at shoring up institutionalized racism?

Why are we being bullied and badgered by Democratic Party hacks calling us “negative” for insisting on accountability from Obama and the Democrats?

    Alan L. Maki

I agree, "force them to enact a progressive agenda." The problem is... if there was the intent of forcing Obama and the Democrats to respond to a progressive agenda where is that movement?

Better yet, why are not the supporters of this "Elect the Dems and Force them" asking the most pertinent question of all which brings all these problems in focus:
"How is the war economy working for you?"

On Labor Day, I did not hear one single one of the labor leaders pushing this idea standing next to Obama or any other Democrat asking this question.

The American people have a right to mull over this question before Election Day.
A positive "solution" would be to end the funding for these dirty wars and long-term occupations and put that money into national public health care and into national public child care centers thus creating around 130-million new jobs... "tax the rich" as is being advocated here in Minnesota by the Democratic candidate for governor, Mark Dayton, is another aspect of a progressive agenda yet I don't see this "tax the rich" being brought forward by the crowd of " ELECT DEMS and FORCE THEM to enact a Progressive agenda! If O doesnt continue to channel FDR after the election, we will kick his ass out in 2012! IF he does, we will be fine."

Everything is not fine in this country as we move up to the midterm elections... where is there any evidence that Barack Obama and the Democrats intend to change course? There isn't. In fact, it is because they have failed to advance or act on a progressive agenda that most of Obama's supporters thought he meant by "hope" and "change" that we are facing a Republican comeback this November when the Republicans had been thoroughly trounced.

This is not "negative thinking;" it is realistic thinking because it simply is no longer possible to prevent the Republicans from coming back.

Working people have a right to expect something for their votes without being accused of being "negative." Wall Street has received a great deal for its investment in Obama... what have working people received in return for their votes? Again, not a "negative" comment and question; just something every voter has a right to in a democracy... which when all is said and done is about accountability from politicians upon which their political fate deserves to rest.

Sovereignty… gaming and our public schools

    Alan L. Maki September 8 at 1:08pm

Zachary; "Their" processes and procedures are not the issue... it was the Democratic Party and its politicians with devised these "Compacts" creating the Indian Gaming Industry. Obviously the tribal governments are not "sovereign" or they wouldn't have needed the Democrats as their accomplices in these crimes against working people. That the casinos are on tribal lands under tribal jurisdiction is a phony argument... the Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner and the FBI among other governmental agencies have jurisdiction over these casinos in many areas including making sure the slot machines are in "compliance." Certainly if the state can have jurisdiction over slot machine compliance the state can have jurisdiction over workers' rights. As it is now, casino workers have NO rights whatsoever... I am not aware of any other country in the world which enables any corporate managements to have such Draconian powers over workers... are you? In fact, the state and federal governments are involved in unemployment and Social Security.

In fact, when the truth be told, not one single Native American or any tribal government owns one single slot machine in the state of Minnesota... these tribal governments are just as corrupt as the state legislature... both are acting on behalf of a bunch of mobsters owning the slot machines and table games... the politicians at all levels are getting their "cut" in the form of campaign contributions often delivered in plain brown shopping bags completely unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, as we have seen up here in northern Minnesota, these casino operations are being used as major distribution points in the drug trade... the Chairman of the Red Lake Nation, Floyd "Buck" Jourdain is mired up to his armpits in the drug trade with his own brother recently arrested as one of the biggest dope dealers ion the world.

And State Representative Dave Olin has publicly acknowledged that during his tenure as Pennington County Prosecutor, the Seven Clans Casino, operated by Red Lake Gaming Enterprises, was a major drug dealing operation and he claims he did nothing because judges and "the feds" told him to keep his nose out of "tribal affairs."

At the point that these corrupt tribal politicians enabled these casinos to deprive working people of their rights and simultaneously (not coincidentally, either) became centers of drug distribution in this country they gave up any "rights" implied by "sovereignty" since it is widely recognized that no sovereign nation may use its sovereignty to deprive working people of their rights or to engage in illegal drug distribution.

You might be interested in knowing that Mr. Stanley Crooks of the Mystic Lakes Casino has had it inserted into the "terms of employment" that union organizing is expressly prohibited even though the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights is very clear on this issue: All workers have the right to form and organize unions to protect themselves and their livelihoods.

I would note that racism and political corruption go hand-in-hand... this is why it becomes so easy to understand why racism--- including in the public schools--- has become so rampant. Do you think that school boards whose members receive campaign contributions and whose schools are receiving "philanthropic gifts" from the likes of Stanley Crooks will not turn around and toe his line?

I have found here in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan that the school board members most hesitant to challenge racism are the recipients of campaign contributions from the Indian Gaming Associations in these states... check out the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association... with its millions upon millions of dollars in campaign contributions to politicians, we don't have one single Native American Indian sitting in the Minnesota State legislature... if this is not institutionalized racism at its very worst I don't know what is... and to think that this racism will not filter down into our public schools is very naive.

Just check out the Minneapolis School Board members, their relationship to the Democratic Party and how these school board members over the years have used campaign contributions received from the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association to advance their political careers.

The casinos are now a multi-billion dollar profit industry in Minnesota... an industry built upon racist poverty and unemployment which suppresses wages... workers receiving poverty wages are going to be poor--- something I am quite upset students do not learn in high school or university economics courses.

I am not satisfied with the current standing of public education which is being twisted to serve corporate interests--- including the casino industry; on the other hand, let us have specific and factual information so we can organize the kind of movement required to make sure the state and federal legislative mandates are being enforced.

Richard Trumka and Barack Obama refuse to ask the most pressing question: How is the war economy working for you?

    Alan L. Maki

Only by the United States government becoming the primary employer can such a huge unemployment problem even begin to be addressed because the facts clearly prove that private industry has taken advantage of this severe recession/depression... to rid itself of what they claim are useless workers... now they employ fewer people producing more at lower costs including severe reductions in wages and benefits as profits have risen.

Solving the problems of working people and societal problems with the government being not only the employer of necessity but the employer of choice on projects like a new Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC as note above); WPA; a national public health care system and a national public child care system both of which would provide well over 13 million new, good-paying jobs.

We need to work our way out of this economic crisis and government becoming the employer of people working to solve problems while providing needed services like health care and child care is the way to go.

Obviously this will cost a lot of money and the money has to come from somewhere... we need a good healthy peace dividend derived from ending these wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan combined with a new tax policy of "tax the rich" and the corporations. Redistribution of the wealth created by working people but now in the possession of a very wealthy few needs to be addressed if we are going to seriously consider putting 20-million unemployed (not to mention the 50-million underemployed and/or paid poverty wages) back to work at real living wages... obviously poverty wage jobs are no solution at all to unemployment and the "small business" sector Obama keeps talking about helping mainly provides poverty wage jobs to workers as these small business people reap huge profits through government subsidies. It is these very small-business people who are first to scream there is "no such thing as a free lunch or a free ride" yet they are selfishly demanding government assistance for themselves the same kind of government assistance they would deprive of others.

Why Richard Trumka and the AFL-CIO never insisted during the debate on health care reform that our insane, arcane private-for-profit delivery of health care be replaced with a universal not-for-profit publicly funded, publicly administered and publicly delivered health care system rather than this farce, the "Health Industry and Health Insurance Bailout and Profit Maximization Act of 2010," needs to be explained since a public program similar to public education is what is required for health care reform... which will create around ten-million new jobs. Why this approach is not being taken by Richard and the AFL-CIO needs to be explained by him.

We need to stop these dirty wars and "tax the rich" to pay for what we need... we would be better off tossing the wealth and resources of our Nation into the ocean rather than waging wars. Why is it so difficult for Richard Trumka to talk about the need for peace to create full employment... we simply can't put America back to work while fighting these murderous destructive wars.

Richard Trumka should have asked of every worker to consider on Labor Day this very basic and fundamental question:

How is the war economy working for you?

    Problems in our public schools

What I need are the specifics; not generalities. The specifics I would like need to come from Marcus concerning the specific school in question.

I have no doubt there is the racism you are claiming because I have assisted a number of our members in finding solutions to racist problems in the MPS as well as across this state... including up here in Warroad over in Thief River Falls, in Duluth and down in Mankato and communities in between--- including in Bemidji.

But, we can do nothing about a vague claim of "racism."

Like for you, this struggle against racism and institutionalized racism in the public schools across Minnesota this has been a problem for many of our members--- casino workers--- of all colors.

I will be happy to explain what I see and have documentation for to the MPS Board or any specific administrators and teachers.

No, I cannot blame the victims in my job. On the other hand, victims of racist injustices have a responsibility to document what they are claiming to be racist discrimination. As of this time, with all that has been written regarding Marcus' initial posting here on FaceBook, Marcus has not documented his problems with his daughter at the public school she attended as a Kindergartner. Marcus, as a community leader, organizer and activist certainly understands the importance of backing up his charges with specific facts.

Again, I ask, what school are we talking about; what were the problems encountered... it would be interesting to hear what Marcus did to try to remedy the problems which led to him removing his daughter from the Minneapolis Public School system and what the responses were from school board members, the principal and teacher involved.

As far as I know, I have never met Zach. I am glad he is a community activist from the Southside... we have many members on the Southside employed at Mystic Lake Casino... I guess I am surprised that Zach has never raised any concerns about the terms of employment of these Southside residents.

I have worked with a number of community activists from the Southside concerning the plight of casino workers on and off their jobs.

I would be inclined to be part of a group, hopefully including you, Marcus and Zach, organized to meet with the public school officials/personnel required to remedy the problems in a way that would encourage Marcus to re-enroll his daughter in the MPS where she, and all other children, have the right to the education mandated by local, state and federal laws and statutes. I assume that if Marcus is convinced all these criteria are met that he would reconsider and revisit his decision.

I consider it very important that people have confidence in our public institutions--- especially our public schools, our most important public institution--- at a time when public institutions are coming under increasing attack from foes and "fair-weather" friends, alike, as those who seek to solve all of our problems through privatizing everything in their quest for maximum profits.

    More lies from Democrats…

      • Alan L. Maki

What a bunch of lies coming from Congresspersons Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum that Obama-care will help senior citizens... the only ones who will benefit from the "Health Insurance Industry Bailout and Profit Maximization Act" will be Wall Street profiteers.

      • It is unethical for McCollum and Ellison to pit one group who might be helped in... some small ways against the harm this legislation brings to the majority of the American working class.

      • This is the very worst kind of political posturing going on taking place at the harm being done to so many people and as nothing more than an excuse for McCollum and Ellison from bringing forward legislation for a national public health care system--- socialized health care; publicly funded, publicly administered and publicly delivered.

      • A fare analysis would be to have a breakdown of the entire legislation to see who is actually helped with their health care needs and who stands to profit.

      • Barack Obama is nothing but a health insurance salesman for Wall Street posing as a part-time president while spending the rest of his time on vacation when he isn't expanding wars and occupying other countries as in Iraq for which the American people are going to be paying through the nose-- more so, then for Bush's initial war... long-term occupation of Iraq won't come cheap... a national public health care system creating around ten-million jobs would be a much better investment.

We shouldn’t dump Obama, some say, because we don’t need 1972 all over again…

    Alan L. Maki

I disagree... we do need 1972 all over again but this time liberals, progressives and the left (the only real meaningful coalition for reform) need to do it correctly this time around... and, yes we can.

The grassroots delegates to the... DFL state convention took it upon themselves to nominate Mark Dayton... his nomination was seconded by well over two-hundred delegates with the majority of the delegates giving his nomination thunderous applause... it was improper for Brian Melendez to withdraw Dayton's nomination as he so sloppily did.

A very proper nomination was made and seconded and Dayton should have been included... at no point did Dayton ever personally decline the nomination.

Which brings me to McGovern and why he (we) lost... first of all McGovern made a big mistake (and I think he may have acknowledged this some years later) that it was wrong to take Eagleton off the ticket... Eagleton was a good liberal and he was more "sane" than any of the backers of the Vietnam War... in fact his problems were not unlike those of Mark Dayton... to suggest as Brian Melendez did as he desperately tried to shore up the losing campaign of Margaret Anderson-Kelliher, that Dayton "is crazy" was taken directly from the playbook used against McGovern with Eagleton by the corporate Democrats who loathed McGovern just as they do Mark Dayton... and, what we have developing in Minnesota is this top section of the Democratic Party claiming they are now "united behind our ticket" actually sitting on their hands and not lifting a finger or opening their pocketbooks... just as they did with McGovern. In fact, even some of the Kennedy's acknowledged voting for Nixon.

Ironically, the Wall Street Democrats are going to cut off their noses to spite their faces in continuing to support Obama and they are prepared to throw the rest of us to the wolves just as they fed us to Nixon.

So, we can take a chance with winning by coming up with a real progressive like George McGovern... or, we can go down to defeat with Obama... personally, I was very satisfied sticking with McGovern.

Obama has now lost all credibility with the very base among the liberals, progressives and left which he requires to win with his speech last night... the occupation of Iraq is going to cost far more than the war and the war in Afghanistan is destined to become the most hated war in all history by the American people and the rest of the world... that ?Barack Obama would have his Press Secretary Robert Gibbs assail and attack the left (the most important component of his base because it is most vocal and most active) and then turn around and tell the Nation he turned to George Bush for advice sealed his doom.

I hope liberals, progressives and the left are, this morning, in deep search of a primary challenger to Obama if he doesn't have the decency to announce he will not run for re-election as Lyndon Johnson did... I would also note that Lyndon Johnson was in a far better political position to seek re-election because he had a stellar domestic record of real reforms under his belt... while all that Obama has is a Wall Street austerity agenda of tightening the belts around the necks of working people who are now suffering as they haven't suffered in over 75 years.

If Dayton is successful with his campaign of "tax the rich" here in Minnesota, he might actually become a presidential contender... just like Floyd Olson was becoming until his untimely death. And Dayton certainly would make a better president than Pawlenty.

I will settle for a defeat with a decent man (or woman) like George McGovern any day over a victory by a two-faced, deceitful, lying, warmongering creep like Barack Obama.

Look what happened when they kicked the “reds” out of the unions…

    A suggestion updated

Perhaps you should ask what happened in the years 1945 to 1948 if you want real answers to your questions... because, as Utah Philips always pointed out, this in when they "kicked the 'reds' out of the unions."
In fact, many unions have bargained away the 8 hour day. You conveniently use 40 hour week but it was the 8 hour day/40 hour week which was fought for; not ten hour days/40 hour weeks or 12 hour days/4 day weeks.
In addition, organized labor has never pushed for the kind of minimum wage legislation really required to end poverty based upon all cost of living factors... choosing instead to negotiate a poverty minimum wage for the workers they don't represent and working with management to enforce union contracts increasing productivity at the expense of the entire working class and the union members paying their big fat salaries through union dues.
Unions, deprived of the best fighters (the left) were then confronted with Ronald Reagan and were impotent in waging any kind of struggle to fight back. Believe me, I know first hand about this because Lane Kirkland threatened to place unions and entire labor councils under trusteeship if they didn't get rid of me--- a "red." And this happened to hundreds of working class activists--- blacklisted by management; blacklisted by the unions... and now you cry.
Figure it out, Utah Philips did; when the reds were kicked out the unions everything went to hell... union membership and the standard of living of the working class.
For years most of you have been afraid to utter the term "working class;" choosing instead to use managements' imposed term: middle class.
Since when are workers ever in the middle class when it comes to the class struggle?
Half the time workers in AFL-CIO unions don't even find out what is in a contract before voting... kind of like what we get from Obama and his Administration with legislation.
How is it the AFL-CIO would support legislation to save the jobs of some teachers when the same legislation involves cutting the Food Stamp program... do you really think that this instills in working people suffering the most from the impoverishment of the working class wanting to organize?

Please note: I posted this comment to the People's World website and the editor deleted it. I guess the questions were too tough to answer. I kind of wonder why they are posting their articles to other sites if they fear discussion?

    Link to article: http://peoplesworld.org/in-rural-ashtabula-ohio-rally-calls-for-gop...

Has anyone considered in all this talk about "green economy, green jobs," included should be the demands:
What tax-payers fund and finance, tax-payers should own--- including the profits?

Also, that these jobs should be real living wage jobs based upon cost of living factors with affirmative action being enforced according to Executive Order #11246.

It seems to me that it is inappropriate to call for blanket support for Democrats as this article implies is being done considering the way Obama has betrayed the American people on so many issues without these candidates clearly articulating where they stand on issues of importance to working people.

Will people just be electing a bunch of Obama clones?
For instance, are any of these candidates campaigning on the theme, "Tax the rich;" or, are working people going to be expected to pay for all of this "green" through higher taxes, user fees, and increases in their electric bills?
And, are these Democrats addressing the expenditures on wars and militarism?

Is anyone asking the all important question while doing all this phone banking for the Democrats:
How is this WAR ECONOMY working for you?

It is definitely good that efforts are being made to encourage people to join the march on Washington on October 2; but, the article is not clear; are these Democrats being campaigned for supporting the calls for peace, jobs and justice? WE know that not all Democrats are for peace because most Democrats have voted to go to war and fund these wars. If this wasn't the case we wouldn't have these dirty wars for oil and regional domination requiring long-term occupation.

I look forward to a discussion on these issues... of course, this kind of begs a discussion about whether or not we need some kind of labor-based people's party in the United States similar to what labor has in Canada with the NDP?

Quite frankly, in my opinion, it is the responsibility of unions to bring forward the issues of importance to working people and if politicians want the votes of working people these politicians should be responding to the issues and concerns of working people.

From this story we don't know if these Democrats receiving this blanket support really deserve it. For all we know these Democrats are part of Obama's team of salespeople for Wall Street's health insurance industry and they are going to be joining the majority of the Democrats in Congress who continue to fund these dirty wars... it is kind of like we vote for Democrats but end up getting what the Republicans would do if they got elected.

Perhaps Joel Wendland could answer some of these concerns.
